Studio Q Presents Quire 2011

Quire Exhibition 2011 will showcase works by people active in the music industry who also explore and reveal their creativity through visual art. Amongst the exhibiting artists are:

Rhea Sherriff Hammond - One half of electro indie pop duo Beaux.
Peter Hince - Former head of road crew for Queen.
Pete Brewis - One half of Field Music.
Pete McAdam - Front man for Washington's noir swamp blues rock group, Monumental Gurus.
Tom Hoad - Guitarist in Sunderland's heavy rock group, Ashes of Iron.
Kenny Sanger - Director of the Bunker, Sunderland.
Lin Li - Vocalist in Glasgow's Russkaya Cappella Choir.

The show includes painting, photography, sculpture, digital and interactive art.

Opening night - Thursday 1st December 6-9pm
Exhibition open 10am-5pm Monday - Friday 2nd - 20th December

Inspirations - Billy Childish

Billy Childish is a prolific painter, poet, and song-writer in a twenty year period he has published over 40 collections of his poetry, recorded over 100 full-length independent LP’s and produced over 2000 paintings.

Born in 1959 in Chatham, Kent. Billy Childish left Secondary education at 16 an undiagnosed dyslexic. Refused an interview at the local art school he entered the Naval Dockyard at Chatham as an apprentice stonemason. During the following six months he produced some six hundred drawings in ‘the tea huts of hell’. On the basis of this work he was accepted into St Martin’s School of Art to study painting. However, his acceptance was short-lived and before completing the course he was expelled for his outspokenness and unorthodox working methods. With no qualifications and no job prospects Childish then spent some 12 years ‘painting on the dole’, developing his own highly personal writing style and producing his art independently.

Quire Date Changes

Due to building work at Studio Q, the Quire 2011 exhibition dates have been moved to December.  The opening night is now Thursday 1st Dec.

New revised dates for submission and opening night:
Submission Date: Monday 14th November
Work to be delivered to Q no later than 30th November
Hanging: Monday 28th - Wednesday 30th November
Preview: Thursday 1st December 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Exhibition Dates: 2nd - 20th December 2011

Inspirations - Gaye Black

Evil Squirrel 2008

Gaye Black is also known as Gaye Advert, the bass player from the legendary late 70's punk band The Adverts with her trademark dark eye makeup and black leather jacket. Advert was the quintessential punk poster girl of the era and appeared in several editions of the music weekly Sounds, NME and Melody Maker and after a couple of appearances on Top of The Pops she cemented her place as the 1970's punk "It Girl".

Since putting down her bass, Gaye recently returned to her creative roots and is now an exhibiting artist. Turning her hand to a wide variety of artistic mediums in order to express her personal experiences from both reality and dreams. She has also curated an art exhibition which included her own pieces as well as those of other punk musicians, including Adam Ant, Charlie Harper and Jamie Reid.

Her portfolio of art is nothing short of a cornucopia of eclectic pieces which incorporate her own photographs and hair, as well as teeth and bones from the banks of the Thames in wunderkammer style enclosed pieces.
