Studio Q Sunderland is very pleased to announce that guest artist and musician Paul Le Hat has agreed to select the work for Studio Q's first externally curated exhibition ‘Quire’, which will take place in November 2011.
‘Quire’ aim is to present works by musicians who also explore and reveal their “visual intelligence” in the forms of photography, painting, sculpture, installation and other forms of visual art.
Musicians are often visual people and also great observers, they see the world from a unique perspective. They are attuned to their physical appearance, especially in a live performance, this visual sensibility is often manifested on stage, with costumes, make-up and props or just simply in the interpretation of the lyrics of a song. They are usually obsessive with the iconography that graces everything from the humble flyer pasted to a lamp post to ludicrously costly music videos.
Paul is interested in how these creative communities of music and art are closely intertwined, how a musician may express themselves visually as well as through their music and performance. There are of course many famous examples of this connection in the work of Andy Warhol and The Velvet Underground, Jamie Hewlett and Gorrilaz, John and Yoko, KLF, Peter Saville / Ben Kelly and Factory Records, Billy Childish and Tracey Emin, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Don Van Vliet to mention a few.
Are you a practicing musician who went to art college or has a passion for making art? Are you a practicing artist who also plays music? Do you draw, paint, sculpt, make sound works or installations, take photographs or make video pieces? Are you active in other creative processes beside music? Finally, would you like the opportunity to be able to exhibit your work?
